Title: CAP Centre Monitor
Purpose of the Position
To provide assistance to clients and to maintain Kawartha Lakes CAP site
operations. To provide access and support to computers and the Internet for
Kawartha Lakes CAP clients.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. To ensure space and equipment is ready for opening of
the CAP center.
2. To open and/or close the CAP center.
3. To answer questions from the public about the center.
4. Assists CAP site users in regards to basic computer operation.
5. Collect users statistics and maintain appropriate records as identified by
Kawartha Lakes CAP.
6. Maintain the appearance of CAP Site.
7. Replenish office supplies as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Background or interest in computers.
2. Interpersonal skills and an interest in people.
3. Ability to communicate and to use tact and diplomacy to handle sensitive
issues.
4. Organizational skills are essential.
Parameters
1. Must comply with policies and procedures around screening and risk
management, including a two month probationary period.
2. Must be available during hours when CAP center is operating.
Time Commitment:
A minimum of a three to four hour shift once a week; position runs for a minimum
of 6 months. Hours may be negotiated with the Kawartha Lakes CAP Program
Manager.
Title: Kawartha Lakes CAP Computer Mentor
Purpose of Position
To tutor and assist clients of the CAP Center in proper computer/Internet use in
support of Kawatha Lakes CAP goals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. To meet with clients at an appropriate time, as scheduled, for tutoring.
2. To assist clients with computer, software and Internet questions.
3. To adhere to center policies and procedures as outlined by the Kawartha Lakes
CAP Program Manager.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Competence in the use of a computer.
2. Reliability & punctuality.
3. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
4. Willingness & ability to teach technical skills to "Non-techies"
Parameters
1. Must comply with all policies and procedures around screening and risk

Title: Cyber-Camp Assistant
General Summary
Assist in the design and implementation of various educational programs that
will introduce children, along with other groups, to the Internet and computer
technology.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assists in the planning and implementation of camp activities; in accordance
with Industry Canada standards.
2. Provides input as to in which communities the camps take place.
3. Assists with the administration and evaluation of cyber-camps.
4. Promotes program within the community.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Background in computer applications and the ability to read and comprehend
computer instruction manuals.
2. Ability to plan effective programs.
3. Previous experience with and an interest in children.
4. Ability to communicate.
5. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to handle sensitive issues.
6. Ability to work well with others.
7. Organizational skills and abilities.

Risk Management
The Kawartha Lakes CAP Program is committed to practicing effective risk
management to protect the safety, dignity and legal rights of others as well as
our human, financial and tangible assets.
Criminal Records Check
Volunteers must obtain a police records check as appropriate for the protection
of clients. Volunteers who do not agree to do this check may be refused
assignment at certain Kawartha Lakes CAP locations.
Access to Kawartha Lakes CAP Property and Materials
Volunteers shall have access to center property and materials necessary to
fulfil their duties and shall receive training in the operation of any such
equipment. Property and materials shall be utilized only when directly required
for CAP purposes and shall not be removed from the site.
Insurance
Liability and accident insurance is not provided for all volunteers engaged in
CAP business.
Confidentiality
Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all
proprietary or privileged information to which they are exposed while serving as
a volunteer, whether this information involves a single staff member, volunteer,
client or other person or involves overall site business.
Worksite
An appropriate worksite shall be established prior to the recruitment of any
volunteer. This worksite shall contain necessary facilities, equipment and space
to enable the volunteer to effectively and comfortably perform his/her duties.
Dress (Behaviour, Language) Code
As representatives of the Kawartha Lakes CAP center, volunteers are responsible
for presenting a good image. Volunteers shall dress (behave, use language)
appropriately for the conditions and performance of their duties.
Purpose of a Volunteer
Purpose of the Kawartha Lakes CAP Volunteer Program
The goal of the Kawartha Lakes CAP Volunteer Program is to provide members of the community with a valuable volunteer experience. It is our hope that any Kawartha Lakes CAP volunteer will leave with a sense of accomplishment and an enhanced skill set. It is the responsibility of the Kawartha Lakes CAP administration to ensure that the volunteer process is enriching and that adequate training and supervision is provided.
Supervisory Model
Volunteers will be supervised using a combination of information provided by the site advisor or host, volunteer mentors and the Kawartha Lakes CAP Program Manager. Each volunteer will be assigned a volunteer mentor who they can turn to for advice and can assist in monitoring the performance of each other. A "tattle-tale" environment will not be encouraged and volunteers should only voice concerns if they feel that it is absolutely necessary.
Recruitment
Kawartha Lakes CAP will be undertaking an active volunteer recruitment strategy that will use the media, special events and existing volunteer recruitment services. Kawartha Lakes sites will be encouraged to recruit volunteers to staff their community site.
Application and Placement
Volunteers will be required to complete a volunteer application in order to be considered for placement. After the application is submitted an interview will take place and references will be required by applicants. References will be checked in order to effectively screen applicants. After this point, an applicant will be accepted or rejected; a placement will be assigned through consultation with the Program Manager.
Orientation
Orientation sessions will be required. However, if an applicant has sufficient skill and ability this will be waived and necessary information will be provided in an informal manner. Session frequency will be based upon intake. New volunteers will be required to complete a two month probationary period in order to assess their fit with the program.
Evaluation
At the end of the required two month probationary period the volunteer will be evaluated by Kawartha Lakes CAP staff to ensure that the user, the staff and the volunteer are happy with the progress thus far. After this evaluation will take place once every six months. An exit survey should be completed at the end of the volunteer position.
Note: the volunteer self assessment can be completed through email or mail. The volunteer assessment may be completed by the direct supervisor and shared over the phone, through email or traditional mail.
Recognition
A formal volunteer recognition will be held once a year, in the month of August. The details and/or form of recognition can be decided at this point.
Informal recognition will take place once every two months. It is hoped that through this volunteers will feel truly appreciated.
Problems
Any issues or concerns that arise should be brought to the direct attention of the volunteer. Please see the Volunteer Discharge Record Form found in the volunteer information section of this manual.
