Oakwood has always been a community involved in recreation. Many organizations are associated with sports like baseball, hockey, ringette, soccer, curling and figure skating.

Baseball has always been a favoured summer sport. Recently soccer has become popular with boys and girls of different age groups eagerly involved.

In 1920, most communities had a baseball team and an organizational league called the Big 4. Other teams playing at that time were Lindsay, Port Perry, Sunderland and Oakwood. The Mariposa Baseball League began in 1908.

Hockey, figure skating and curling are the most active winter sports in Oakwood. Hockey was first played in the old rink until the Oakwood arena was built. This sport and arena continue to thrive to this day. Minor hockey teams of all ages participate, Oldtimers, and Women's teams have been established and have been successful. The ringette teams in Oakwood named Mariposa Ringette. Dressed in blue and gold for years they proved to be a constant standout in the sport and continues to participate in the league. Winning various championships put Oakwood on the map. Figure Skating was and is a big part of the community. Children of all ages take part and put on a final ice show every year.

Curling was introduced in 1940 with the games being played on the skating rink. The curling rink, consisting of three sheets of artificial ice, was built in 1946-47. The club joined the Ontario Curling Association in 1941 and by 1949 a ladies club was formed.
