Information on CAP Program

Introduction

The Community Access Program (CAP) is a Government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada, that aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively. With the combined efforts of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, community groups, social agencies, libraries, schools, volunteer groups and the business community, CAP helps Canadians, wherever they live, take advantage of emerging opportunities in the new global knowledge-based economy. Under CAP, public locations like schools, libraries and community centres act as "on-ramps" to the Information Highway, and provide computer support and training.

In rural Canada, CAP has clearly demonstrated the benefits of affordable public Internet access and opened doors to a multitude of new possibilities for rural communities. Together, we created a partnership model that helped raise awareness of the Information Highway, and that will help Canada remain a world leader in the innovative use of information technologies.

CAP's Objectives

  • To provide Canadians with affordable access to the Internet and raise awareness about its potential for creating economic growth
  • To provide Internet training facilities for local entrepreneurs, employees, educators, students and others interested in improving their information management and networking skills.
  • To stimulate the electronic delivery of government and other services and obtain feedback from citizens about how they would like these presented.

Kawartha Lakes CAP Information

Kawartha Lakes Community Access Program (KLCAP) is a network of 22 public access locations serving residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes. The KLCAP project is sponsored by Industry Canada's CAP initiative and is managed by the Technology Alliance Group for Kawartha Lakes (TAG).

Kawartha Lakes CAP Main Objectives

  • To local communities with affordable access to the Internet
  • To raise local awareness about the Internet's potential for economic and social growth
  • To provide computer training facilities and affordable training programs
  • To act as a catalyst for locally driven technology improvement projects
