Memorial Cairn and Gardens

The memorial cairn and gardens of Burnt River came about with the hard work and dedication of the member of the Burnt River 2000 Committee and with assistance of the members of the community. The council of the township of Somerville provided funding for this through a generous grant. The artist Richard Hayward drew his depiction of the ploughman that was used for the Cairn and Gardens. The Rock for this Cairn was donated by Dudman Quarries, who also gave their help with the installation, along with the township employees. The improved exterior lighter was a project of the Burnt River 2000 Committee and it was funded by donations from numerous government and community organizations:

Burnt River canoe route

This canoe route is a historic Native canoe route which served as an important access route to hunting and fishing grounds until the mid-1800s. People can choose to do all or just part of the route. Access can be gained to the rivers from a number of locations, depending on how long someone wishes to spend on the river. There are two seperate paths of the Burnt River system. The Drag River Route begins in the Village of Haliburton to Gelert and on into Kinmount to follow Burnt River to Fenelon Falls. This path is 80 KM long and takes 2.5 days to complete. The other path is the Irondale River Route. It starts in Gooderham and meets up with the Drag River route at Howland Juntion, continues along Burnt River again ending up in Fenelon Falls. It is 74 KM long and also takes 2.5 days of travel time to finish.
